FAQ

What is the 4% rule?
A 4% safe withdrawal rate from a 60/40 portfolio historically lasted 30+ years in most US backtests. It is an assumption, not a guarantee.
Should I use real or nominal returns?
Real (post-inflation) returns make the result meaningful in today's dollars. The default 5% real assumes a long-run equity-heavy portfolio.
How does Coast FI relate?
Coast FI is the amount you would need today such that, untouched, it grows to your FIRE number by traditional retirement age. See the dedicated calculator.
